Rookies extremely Punish Nomads
The 2023 TNM Super League continues to provide upsets as Mighty Mukuru Wanderers on Saturday lost to rookies Exteme FC at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
Just two weeks after they were embarrassed 1-0 by rookies Chitipa United at Kamuzu Stadium, the Nomads found themselves at the receiving end of yet another upset by a similar scoreline.
This time they were put to the sword by the Mchinji-based outfit who before the match were the only team in the league yet to collect maximum points.
After a balanced battle, the home team drew first blood in the 38th minute when Gregory Mwase headed in a John Chalamanda free kick.
Wanderers were then dealt a blow in the 41st minute when defender Miracle Gabeya was shown a straight red card for a dangerous tackle.
The card, exacerbated the Nomads bad day to turn worse as Extreme finally proved they are not pushovers.
Extreme caretaker coach former Flames defender Elvis Kafoteka in a postmatch interview said it was a relief to collect full points.
He said: “This was my third game. I tried to switch the system.
“We knew they overload the midfield and we countered that. I thank God for this victory. I would also like to thank the players for adapting to the system.
“I told them that in football everything is possible. They just have to play their hearts out.”
Extreme have now moved from the bottom to position 15 with five points, displacing Red Lions who have four points.
Wanderers midfielder and assistant coach Alfred Manyozo Jnr apologised for the Nomads’ failure to come to the party.
He said: “There is no excuse for this. We are a big team.”
Both FCB Nyasa Bullets and Wanderers had a chance of going top before on Saturday matches.
But it was Bullets, who showed more hunger, beating Ekwendeni Hammers 4-1 at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre to return to the top of the table.
Bullets, who were licking their wounds from last week’s 1-0 loss to Chitipa United, were on target through Hassan Kajoke in the third minute, their top goal scorer Lanjesi Nkhoma in the 37th minute, Patrick Mwaungulu in the 53rd minute and Anthony Mfune in the 88th minute.
The visitors were visibly missing the services of four players, including their top scorer Mphatso Magaleta, who were not available due to a loan agreement with their parent club Bullets.
However, they got a consolation through a Gomezgani Chirwa own goal in the 81st minute.
Bullets coach Kallisto Pasuwa in a post-match interview praised his charges for a perfect response to their last week loss.
Meanwhile, Karonga United and Mighty Tigers settled for one-all draw at Karonga Stadium.
The visitors scored first through Trevor Kajani, but Karonga equalised in the 88th through Davie Tobias.
Action resumes this afternoon as second-placed Silver host Mafco at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
Team of the moment Chitipa United, who ended Bullets and Wanderers unbeaten run, are also in action. The fourth-placed outfit are away to Red Lions at Balaka Stadium this afternoon.
Blue Eagles host Civil Service United at Nankhaka Stadium.ture.
Eagles are on position sixth while Civil are 11th.
